Bringing Cambodia to You
Dream today – travel tomorrow
The world may be in lockdown but that won’t stop us from travelling in our imaginations. In this newsletter we’re bringing Cambodia to you – offering an escape from reality and hopefully inspiring you to plan your future bucket list adventures.
From laid-back beaches and charismatic cities to centuries-old temples and jungle-clad mountains – Cambodia is a collision of ancient and modern worlds.
The remains of the mighty Khmer empire can be seen at the magnificent Angkor temples. Pristine jungles span the heart of the country hiding a culture untouched by the western world. Charming towns and cities boast chic cafes, diverse architecture and a thriving art scene. Add to all that the resilient and optimistic Khmers themselves. People who have survived unbelievable hardships and horror – yet have come out smiling.
In Cambodia – be prepared for an emotional journey which will stay with you forever.
Elegant and sumptuous, with rooms that ooze with Khmer-inspired comfort and a spa that offers the ultimate wellness experience, Park Hyatt Siem Reap has always been one of our favourite escapes. Now, more than ever, it’s important to nourish your wellbeing, wind down, stress less and sleep soundly. Therefore World of Hyatt has teamed up with Headspace to offer curated meditation and sleep exercises on the World of Hyatt app. Plus members get a complimentary trial offer.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider shot the Angkor temples to mainstream fame. Who can forget the sight of beautiful Angelina Jolie engaged in unarmed combat with a group of masked marauders against a mystical backdrop of the root-riddled Ta Phrom Temple?
If you haven’t yet seen this hugely fun adventure romp, then check out it out while dreaming about a future visit to Angkor. Imagine snapping the sunrise at Angkor Wat, followed by explorations of ancient temples swallowed by the jungle.
If only the walls of Le Bokor Palace could talk – they’d be screaming stories of decadence, death, destruction – and a grand renaissance. After twists and turns through decades of war and uncertainty, this luxury hilltop haven is now a jewel on the Cambodian skyline. The ghosts of war have been laid to rest and have made way once again for dining, dancing, laughter and romance.
Classical Cambodian ballet — or Apsara dancing – dates back to the 7th century. Scenes of sensual Apsara dances have been immortalised in stone on the walls of many ancient temples. In this video from Experience Cambodian Living Arts we hear from Voan Savay, who was a prima ballerina in the Royal Ballet of Cambodia in the late 60s and early 70s. We can also learn some of the moves and intricate hand gestures that are incorporated into this elegant style of dance.
There is more to Cambodia than temples! So many people pass through Phnom Penh on their way to Siem Reap, but it’s worth lingering a while in this former French colony. Once the ‘Pearl of Asia’, Phnom Penh’s allure was tarnished by the impact of war and revolution. But the city has since risen and now takes its place among the hip capitals of the region. Our partner, ICS Travel Group, tells us how the ideal mix of history, culture and nightlife makes Cambodia’s capital the perfect place to begin your Khmer adventure.
