EXPLORE RIVA SURYA’S HISTORIC NEIGHBOURHOOD

Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Riva Surya’s surrounding area is one of the most vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods in Bangkok. Towards the last decade of the 19th Century, Banglamphu underwent a huge transformation. Following the royal settlement of the new Dusit district to the north, a number of the nobility established their palaces along today’s Phra-Athit Road. Parallel to Phra-Athit Road, Chakkraphong Road was built as part of King Chulalongkorn’s great project of building a royal thoroughfare from his palace in Dusit. To discover the area’s vibrant history, simply arrange your stay at Riva Surya Bangkok and let your feet do the rest!

Welcome to Riva Surya

Situated along the enchanting Chao Phraya River, Riva Surya Bangkok offers an idyllic urban getaway in the heart of this cosmopolitan city. This modern boutique hotel in Bangkok features 68 beautifully designed rooms, elegant dining options, a riverside swimming pool and leisure facilities that cater to the needs of both business and leisure travellers.

Thai fruit carving is a traditional Thai art that requires neatness, precision, meditation and personal ability. Fruit carving is believed to have originated in central Thailand several hundred years ago. One account describes the art beginning with a royal servant who wanted to create a more visually pleasing decorative raft during the Loi Kratong festival.

Riva Surya Bangkok is pleased to invite guests to learn one of Thailand’s oldest decorative arts. Join our Fruit & Vegetable Workshop – available on Friday and Saturday at our Supapan Room from 17:00-20:30 – and learn the basics of advanced fruit carving designs.

MEDITERRANEAN SET-DINNER

The Mediterranean diet is perhaps the world’s healthiest diet. Abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil, the Mediterranean diet favours fish and poultry – lean sources of protein – over red meat, which contains saturated fat. Oenophiles can also rejoice as red wine is consumed regularly, although in moderate amounts!

Research has proved that people who eat more fish, whole grains and healthy fats not only weigh less but are also at less risk for heart disease, depression and dementia. So what are you waiting for? Check out Riva Surya’s exclusive Mediterranean Set-Dinner from Chef Apirak Opara:

ONLY 850 BAHT++

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT…

One of Bangkok’s lesser-known palaces, the Bang Khun Phrom is a magnificent, early 20th century European-style palace situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Just a short 15-minute walk from Riva Surya Bangkok, Bang Khun Phrom was built by King Chulalongkorn to serve as the royal residence for His Royal Highness Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand. Three buildings were constructed on the grounds, the main mansion called Tamnak Yai, the Tamnak Somdej building and the Tamnak Ho Residential Hall, the last of which was later moved to Dusit Palace. All structures were built in different architectural styles and designed by different architects. Today, the main mansion of Bang Khun Phrom Palace is used as the Bank of Thailand Museum. Various rooms across the two floors contain displays on the history of money in Thailand, from the earliest currencies until today.

HAVE WE GOT NEWS FOR YOU?

Khlong Bangluang’s official name is Khlong Bangkokyai and is a canal stretching from the Chao Phraya River at the ancient Fort Wichai Prasit all the way to Khlong Mon, six kilometres away. Khlong Bangluang is wider than all the neighbouring canals as it was the main route to the Chao Phraya River in the time of King Chai Rachathiraj who, in 1522, began the building of this canal as a shortcut from his palace to the river. It also provided easy access for merchants from the West who travelled to trade with the Thai Kingdom during this time. Today, this khlong provides a convenient waterway from Siriraj Hospital to Wat Arun.

During the reign of King Taksin (1767-1782), the palace was re-established at Thonburi and the area around Khlong Bangkokyai became a residential area for officials and nobles. The King also allowed high-ranking Chinese, who supported the King’s move to Thonburi, to build their houses along the canal. Thereafter, people named this waterway as Klong Bangkaluang – “Bang” meaning area and “Kaluang”, which means officials who worked for the King.

At the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, Bangkok was widely known as the Venice of the East as people travelled around the city primarily by boat using the river and khlongs as their major routes. Along both sides of Khlong Bangluang was a community of nobles, high-ranking officials and the “old rich”. The area provides fascinating stories of those earlier times and is famous for its mixture of race, religion and culture, where Thais, Chinese and Muslims share a rich heritage and a strong waterside community that exists to this day.

HAVE WE GOT NEWS FOR YOU?

Established for over 230 years, the Thai Tien community has lived next to the Chao Phraya River since Thonburi was Thailand’s capital. Originally an old ceramic port that traded with China during the Ayuthaya period, the Tha Tien community were a cultural blend of Chinese immigrants, local fisherman and high ranking local officials that were highly active in rebuilding the nearby neighbourhood.

Due to its proximity to the river, Tha Tien was once an important trade route for food, vegetables and fruit from all over Thailand and continued to be a strategic port up until the early 20th-Century. Today, the Tha Tien community consists of around 800 houses, 80% of which are attractive shophouses built during the reign of King Rama V and in the style of European architecture.
