HAVE WE GOT NEWS FOR YOU?
Khlong Bangluang’s official name is Khlong Bangkokyai and is a canal stretching from the Chao Phraya River at the ancient Fort Wichai Prasit all the way to Khlong Mon, six kilometres away. Khlong Bangluang is wider than all the neighbouring canals as it was the main route to the Chao Phraya River in the time of King Chai Rachathiraj who, in 1522, began the building of this canal as a shortcut from his palace to the river. It also provided easy access for merchants from the West who travelled to trade with the Thai Kingdom during this time. Today, this khlong provides a convenient waterway from Siriraj Hospital to Wat Arun.
At the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, Bangkok was widely known as the Venice of the East as people travelled around the city primarily by boat using the river and khlongs as their major routes. Along both sides of Khlong Bangluang was a community of nobles, high-ranking officials and the “old rich”. The area provides fascinating stories of those earlier times and is famous for its mixture of race, religion and culture, where Thais, Chinese and Muslims share a rich heritage and a strong waterside community that exists to this day.
