The Au Co Cruise – Exploring deep into the Gulf of Tonkin

by Sep 17, 2019Cruises, Vietnam

Located in northern Vietnam, Halong Bay is a stunning seascape of some 1,600 sheer sided islands that rise from the emerald water. The area is so breathtaking it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Halong is a must on every travellers’ to-do list, but what about the lesser known, less touristy but no less spectacular neighbours of Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay?

The 3-day, 2-night cruise on the luxurious Au Co is the only boat in the bay to go so deep into the Gulf of Tonkin and take in all three bays. In addition guests will remain on the same Au Co for the entire trip, rather than transferring on and off day boats.

Cabins

Even while relaxing in bed you won’t miss out on the views, as all 32 cabins come with full length floor to ceiling windows. Early morning, watch limestone karsts drift by, then spend the evening on your private balcony watching the sunset. Sizes start from a generous 20sqm for a Deluxe Cabin to 40sqm for a Long Quan Suite. All have natural wooden floors, handmade furniture and well-appointed ensuite bathrooms.

Excursions

The Au Co’s unique itinerary embraces authentic and traditional cultural experiences.

In Lan Ha Bay, the boat stops at Cat Ba Island. Hop on a bike to explore the forest tracks that wind through the misty jungle covered mountains – or join a trek, an exclusive activity offered on the three-day cruise. Come across an isolated village in the midst of the jungle where the villagers live in harmony with nature in simple houses made of bamboo, wood, leaves and soil.

Back on the water, paddle a kayak under the overhanging rock formations to find hidden caves and secluded beaches. Venture into the dark depths of the caves to discover stalactites and stalagmites.

Onboard

Start the day with a sunrise Tai Chi session on the sundeck. Enjoy delicious meals with a waterside view on the balcony or inside the restaurant decked out in metal and wood.

When cruising the bays, sink into a sunbed and enjoy 360 degree views of the magnificent scenery. Relax in the spa and immerse yourself in the outdoor Jacuzzi. There’s Vietnamese tea ceremonies, fruit carving and dance performances; while in the evenings the sundeck turns into an outdoor cinema.
